| Professor Jeffrey Legro is Randolph P. Compton Professor at the University of Virginia and past chair of the department of politics. He is a co-founder and faculty associate of the Governing America in a Global Era Program at the Miller Center of Public Affairs. A specialist on international relations, he is the author of "Rethinking the World: Great Power Strategies and International Order" (2005) and "Cooperation under Fire: Anglo-German Restraint during World War II" (1995) and the co-editor (with Melvyn P. Leffler) of "To Lead the World: U.S. Strategy after the Bush Doctrine" (2008) and "In Uncertain Times: American Foreign Policy after the Berlin Wall and 9/11" (2011). Professor Legro directed the American Political Science Association (APSA) Task Force on U.S. Standing in the World and is past president of APSA's International History and Politics section. His work on comparative foreign policy, international cooperation and conflict, China's future in world politics, international norms and law, military doctrine and strategy, and the causes of policy ideas and national identity have appeared in "Foreign Policy", "The American Political Science Review", "International Organization", "International Security", "American Journal of Political Science", "European Journal of International Relation", and "Perspectives on Politics". He is on the editorial board of the Washington Quarterly. He has been awarded fellowships from the Council on Foreign Relations, The Fulbright Program, U.S. Institute of Peace, The Ford Foundation, Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation, Institute for the Study of World Politics, and Harvard University's Olin Institute and Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. Professor Legro received his B.A. from Middlebury College and Ph.D. from UCLA. Many believe that the powerful dictate the rules. International order today, however, is being shaped by the bargains cut between established and emerging powers. As a Fulbright-Nehru scholar Professor Legro is examining the agreements that India has reached with the United States to understand their origins and impact on international order. What we do not understand well is the changing nature of India's purpose in order and what kind of deals will be possible with others (especially the United States). Professor Legro's research will illuminate the nature, sources, and consequences of India's preferences and deal making on international order. |
